Integrating Virtual Reality, Tele-Conferencing, and Entertainment into Multimedia Home Computers

چکیده
Technological advances are revolutionizing computers and electronic devices to support digital multimedia, stimulating the development of a wide spectrum of applications , such as tele-conferencing and video entertainment , that can be ooered to end-consumers. Such applications when coupled with virtual reality, will result in a new generation of systems enabling eeective tele-personal interactions between individuals via their multimedia home workstations. The integration of virtual reality techniques with multimedia teleconferenc-ing leads to the development of tele-virtual conferenc-ing systems, that synthesize panoramic, lifelike three-dimensional video images and stereophonic audio. We investigate the architectural requirements of such systems and propose a high-level design of an Intelligent Multimedia Interface Unit (IMIU) capable of supporting tele-virtual conferencing in multimedia home computers .

Analysing movement and world transitions in virtual reality tele-conferencing
In this paper we make use of automatically generated logs of user activity from 6 meetings held using the MASSIVE-1 virtual reality tele-conferencing system to determine a number of characteristics of user movement and world transition. These results are applied to a consideration of four issues for CVE system design and resource requirements: the amount of network bandwidth and computation req...
متن کاملMethodology for Distributed Usability Evaluation in Collaborative Virtual Environments
This paper describes the methodological implications for evaluation research on collaborative virtual environments. The information is based on the experiences drawn from a longitudinal study of MASSIVE-1, a virtual reality tele-conferencing system. Benefits and drawbacks of the constraints on methodology, implicated by the developmental stage of collaborative virtual environment technology, ar...

Augmented Reality (AR), a computer science field considered by many as a subfield of the broader concept of Mixed Reality, could alter dramatically the way we interact not only with computers but also with the real environment surrounding us, as well as with other human beings. Augmented Reality has so far been used for applications linked with military training, medicine, maintenance, architec...

We present two examples of interfaces for Mobile Mixed Reality Conferencing. The WearCom interface surrounds the user with a wearable body-stabilized communications space, while the Tangible Conferencing interface represents remote collaborators are live virtual video images attached to real objects. Both interfaces run on commercially available wearable computers, and they demonstrate how Mixe...
متن کاملThe Virtual Video Gallery: a user-centred media on-demand system
The convergence of multimedia, virtual reality and the Internet is promoting the development of large-scale, interactive Multimedia Virtual Environments (MVEs) (Ferscha & Johnson 1999) characterized by easy accessibility, which integrate multimedia streaming into a virtual world. Application domains ranging from education to entertainment, from health care to military simulations, can be suppor...
